Filipino Invention - Jeepney Coin Sorter

You know how there are lists floating around of these awesome inventions by Filipinos and some of them turn out to be hoaxes?  This invention, a jeepney coin sorter, I wish was real.  Unfortunately it doesn't exist.  Challenge accepted... anyone?
__________________________________________________________

One of my machine design projects when I was still taking up my Mechanical Engineering was a coin sorter and wrapper, made even more challenging by the professor's requirement that it should have a single input action, say a rotating motion.  We never finished it and had to change projects halfway through.  But remembering it got me thinking... I wonder how much interest there would there be for a jeepney coin sorter?

Jeepney Coin Sorter

Imagine this: assuming the jeepney driver doesn't have a barker collecting the jeepney fare, his eyes would constantly be looking at the money, counting and doing the maths for change, and counting the change before giving it to the passenger, all while driving through Manila traffic.  If he could do this in an easier, more organised manner, Manila street will be that much safer, don't you agree?

There are numerous designs of coin sorters in the market, and I suppose most of them are used in banks rather than in jeepneys.  Most of them are also bulky electronic sorters, using scanners and weights to determine the type of coin, and sorting them out via vibration or a series of differently sized meshes.  The jeepney coin sorter can't be like that.

Design the Coin Sorter

The jeepney coin sorter needs to be compact enough to be placed in front of the jeepney driver without obscuring his view of the street.  It needs to be able to receive at least a handful of coins at a time and be able to sort them just via gravity.  Because the driver needs to give out change, he should also be able to get sorted money with ease.

An upgrade to this would be installation of an electronic counter which shows (or speaks) how much you have dropped in.

To summarise, your challenge is:

  1. Design a coin sorter specifically for use in a jeepney, by the jeepney driver
  2. Coin sorter must be able to receive at least a handful of coins at a time a properly sort them
  3. Driver must be able to retrieve sorted coins easily to give out change
  4. Bonus: install an electronic counter to show how much money was placed into the sorter.

Challenge accepted?

I have a feeling someone will take this challenge and a few months from now I will get a comment on this post that they've created the jeepney coin sorter and it is being mass produced for jeepneys all over the Philippines. Or maybe not.  Who knows?

  2. Rey,

Yup. A necessary evil, it is. I used to be an adjuster for Geico and oh my goodness the stories I could tell...

Your blog is looking great, by the way.

  3. Hi Rey,

An adjuster looks at the damage to a car, and figures out how much it will cost to fix it. Sometimes the car is totaled, meaning it would cost more to replace it than what the value is.

Yeah, maybe I should write a book, eh? Hehe.

  18. Nice post there.

Gibo Teodoro really has the "it" if only academic excellence is considered. However, I've learned that he is also a man of action. In fact, rumors said that he did not sleep for about 48 hours when Bagyong Ondoy devastated the NCR considering he is the Defense Secretary at that time. This self sacrifice tells a lot about the man's character.

Surely, I will vote for Gibo.

Thanks for the reminder about AIDS. We don't hear nearly as much about it these days.

As a doctor, I will add a word: Eng. Dizzy, Tag. Hilo, Bat. Liyo

Patient: Doctor, Umay na ga ako sa gam-ot. Bakit ga ako palaging naliliy-o?

Doc: Reynante, ka-hilig mo ga magpatumbalik sa bubong nila Nena, eh!

    Reynante: Walastik!

  27. Wowwww! This is amazing!
I do hope Jasmin comes back and and try to learn all these words, phrases and sentences! They're a LOT! :D Haha!

    ReplyDelete
  28. How Batagueño am I? As you know Rey, I was born in Manila (UST - near Lepanto), and I never made it pass Waray, Native dialect of my mother, hehe. Reading this list of words is driving me nuts, although I do remember some of them, due to the resemblance with Tagalog. Anyway, I still missed something out: What is "Kapeng Barako" after all? Maraming salamat ha for the answer, lol

    ReplyDelete
  29. Sakit naman ang pus-on ko sa katatawa sa listahang ire. Bakin ga gay-an, Rey.

  32. You should have your own Christmas concert, ReyJr! I like the lyrics of the song you posted. I thought like a virgin was a little weird until I thought of The Virgin Mary and then, of course, it made sense. Beautiful! Peace to all.

And I thought that was how you kept away those storm clouds hanging over

    You got me there.

  36. El Rey, your royal highness! Can I apply to be one of your castle scribes?... I'd pass up Disneyland castle for that one in Germany though. Or any other castle in old Europe. :)

    ReplyDelete
  37. I had lots of classmates from Batangas...and what makes me love the Batangueno language or for other linguists dialect is not really the words by how you speak those words...

The sound of a true-blooded Batagueno speaking on his native tongue is just so amazing....

    Ala eh!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Oh my! Thanks goodness I commented without the previous hassle...

  42. I've seen Sleeping Beauty's castle in Orlando, Florida, but not the California version.
The castle in Deutschland is gorgeous! I've been to one in Salzburg, Austria, but it was more of a fortress.

Rey, please check out my new blog, Kigo of the Kat.

  43. What a wonderful description you give, ReyJr! Once again, I am jealous of your experience. Most women here spent their girlhoods dreaming of castles, and of being a Princess. (And some little boys! lol)

    ReplyDelete
  44. Daddies like you are the reason we dream of being Princesses - it's so different from the everyday world. Or at least it SHOULD be. I hate seeing all those Sweet 16 parties where parents spend thousands of dollars. Why would anybody do that? Soon enough we realize there is no Prince Charming, only other human beings just like us and things settle down. (A lot of frogs too, that don't turn into Princes once kissed!)

    ReplyDelete
  45. I kinda got stuck at "He fell flat on her face." I didn't know this was that kind of blog, Rey.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Oh you are bad! Better than falling fat on her face I suppose.

Rey, it's a bad word. I wouldn't dream of repeating it here. :)

    ReplyDelete
  47. Hello Rey,

It has been a while since i've been here. Missed your easy banter. Di ba ang mga Batangueno ay iyan ang mga purong tagalog talaga? Ala ey. I've never been to Batangas . Tamang tama mapasyalan ka namin doon....he he he.

  48. Hi Rey, i wonder if this is the beachfront private house your group stayed in as shown in the pix above? Can you help provide the contact details of how to rent the vacation house as we've been wanting to stay here since summer. Many thanks.

  49. Have you been watching "The Cook, the Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover" on YouTube, Heather?

    ReplyDelete
  50. I've always loved the bit on one of Tom Lehrer's albums where he talks about a guy named Henry. Henry was such an individualist, he spelled his name "Hen3ry" - "the 3 was silent."

    ReplyDelete
  51. No, but now I want to watch. :) I think. It sounds vaguely familiar. ??

    ReplyDelete
  52. Bon appetite! (Okay, sorry, that was just mean. It's the best horrible, awful movie ever.)

  53. Era of the Elite will soon rise again. I don't know if it's good or bad--- now, but I think before it was good in the business world, lots of parties, socialites, all were friends?! or so I think.

    ReplyDelete
  54. She is married to the Thief. The Cook, though, is not her lover.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Wonderful post, Reyjr. I have been in the Disneyland castle but not a real one like you described. I could almost feel what it was like to be there. Good to read you again.

    ReplyDelete
  56. It's so hard, Rey Jr! They have such big eyes and they just LOOK at you! lol Sounds like you've got a good plan. Although your comment brings to mind an old phrase my Grandfather would say, "It's hard to be humble when you're Norwegian." You could change it to, "It's hard to be humble when you're Rey Jr."

    ReplyDelete
  57. I would like very much to visit the castles in Austria, or anywhere in Europe - add the castle of King Arthur...he he he... a myth?

Could you please post too the house where they filmed the Sound of Music? I have watched that movie several times and still marvel at the scenic spots the film featured.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Wow! I like the picture of the food. It looks so delicious.

  59. with all you giving away invites, I am very much tempted to grab one, but I really don't think I can spread myself a little thinner lol

maybe later, and I really don't mind being the last one ;)

    ReplyDelete
  60. That's a nice example you've set, Rey - helping remove the misconceptions about getting yourself tested for AIDS.

World AIDS day is a trending topic. Well done. Ahehehe.

    ReplyDelete
  61. let me be the very first commentator to thank you for giving me an exclusive GOOGLE WAVE invite. lol. I was very delighted when I heard(err read) that I won in your contest? hehe.. But since I have one already I decided to gave the invite to my friend. Thanks again!

    ReplyDelete
  62. Really? You already meet Mickey? Bakit hindi nya ako kasama? LOL!

Great adventures Rey :) So, is the princess still asleep?

    ReplyDelete
  63. I do.. :D I'll blog about my pets one of these days :D

    ReplyDelete
  64. What at awesome way to spread the word about AIDS bro. Kudos and thanks for the mention for more Gwave invites in case someone missed out the opp. BTW, didn't know you were an expert on Calculus, man that was tough, lol

    ReplyDelete
  65. You have to remind me again Rey, been busy the past few days.

    Z

    ReplyDelete
  66. I remember when AIDS was the big deal talk. Now it's all but a blip on the radar. It's reminders like this that keep people aware and, hopefully, cautious.

I like being the last to try things ~ long after everyone has worked out all of the kinks. heehee Or like being a day late on commenting on blog posts. =)

  67. Oh, dear God...my balut looked better than that, and why is it FOAMING? @#$!

It isn't CRUNCHY, either. By the time you've cooked it, all the crunchy bits are nice and soft. C'mon, man up, Rey - or your knees (and other parts) might just give out at inopportune moments!

  69. The lyrics are quite poetic. I really like the imagery.

My favorite holiday songs seem to always touch on the religious side ~ What Child is This ~ sung by Johnny Mathis always gets to me. But my all time favorite is Sleigh Ride, also as sung by Johnny Mathis ~ it's not religious, but it's fun. =)

  76. Who is this Holly Jahangiri you speak of??? ;-) I really enjoyed this book. I would have loved it as a little girl.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Doc Z, am I s'posed to bow, or curtsy, or shake his hand? I never met a King before...well, I mean, I met Mr. Rey on another blog, but he didn't say he was KING and I've been calling him Mr. Rey. Probably should be Mr. Your Majesty Rey, huh? Anyways, thank you all so much for the warm welcome! I'm having a BLAST!

    ReplyDelete
  78. Miss Heather, didn't you do an interview with Miss Holly? You know Miss Holly! You're just teasing, aren't you?

    ReplyDelete
  79. Me too, Emz! Dogs can play in AND out of the water. But gups are cool. I thought they'd just float around like some lazy ol' stupid logs, but no, they're cool. Not as pretty as the one in your picture though, Mr. Your Majesty Rey.

    ReplyDelete
  80. What an enticing post to interest people in A Puppy, Not a Guppy.

    Vivian

    ReplyDelete
  81. That's a grammatically correct Tagalog sentence. What translator did you use Holly? lol.

Also: "Huwag ipakain ang mga guppies sa malalaking isda."

(Don't feed the guppies to bigger fishes.) lol

    ReplyDelete
  86. OMG, if you haven't said that the baby was you "screaming" your guts out, I would have never guessed that someone was even there. What happened, was mommy treating you bad? hahahah
