Finding "Handel's Messiah: A Soulful Celebration" on YouTube

 "Handel's Messiah: A Soulful Celebration"

This has got to be one of my favorite albums of all time: "Handel's Messiah: A Soulful Celebration" release in 1992 and executive produced by Norman Miller, Gail Hamilton and Mervyn Warren, is a reinterpretation of the 1741 oratorio "Messiah" by George Frideric Handel - yes it is a famous classical piece usually sung during Christmastime - but was transformed into an extraordinary mix of African-American music including spirituals, blues, ragtime, big band, jazz fusion, R&B and hip hop. The result, pure joy in music.  The album received the 1992 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Soul Gospel Album.

I've had the privilege to sing the original Handel's Messiah many times during my days in the choir, and I've also had the privilege to perform the "Hallelujah" from the above-mentioned album - complete with choreography! I'd like now to share with you what I mean, in case this is your first time to hear about it - and if not, I invite you to listen in to these selections from the 2 beautiful pieces of music...

Random Halloween Conversation

Rey: Let's find something scary to watch on TV.
Liz: Sige.
Rey: *Channel Surfing* (Zombieland, A Christmas Carol...?!)
Liz: *tumbling*

Oh well, we didn't get our scare fix this Halloween, but hopefully we get to watch the current "Walking Dead" Season 2. Haha.

Songs I'd Love to Cover Part 1

As most of you know, singing is a great passion of mine. When I was younger (and more uninhibited LOL) I would break into song all the time, I would sing at home in the bathroom, in the car, while walking in the mall, waiting for the next class... practically anywhere. You know it when a song catches in your brain and you just start singing, softly at first then, suddenly when you hit the chorus, you sing out loud like nobody's business. ;)

If I was to make an album today, and will be doing a cover of any song I want - these songs would be in my short list. Or if I was asked to make a set list for me and my imaginary band these songs would definitely make the cut...

1. "Before We Come Undone" - Kris Allen

This wasn't a huge hit for Kris Allen, but the beat of this song is really cool, it just makes me rock it out like a rockstar (even though I don't even know the words haha). I also like how the song is dramatic but not overly dramatic, sexy but not trying hard.

Remembering 9/11

I could never be able to make a blog post tribute worthy of the tragedy that was 9/11, but hopefully this short post will be able to convey my condolences to the victims, and send to them a message of remembrance and hope.

It has become one of those events where people ask - "Where were you when it happened?"

I was at home. I received a text message from a friend telling me to open the television to CNN as the World Trade Center in New York City was hit by an airplane. I was mortified by what I saw - one of the twin towers with smoke billowing from one side, and watched in horror as an airplane crashed into the other tower...

The Uber Prestigious Top 10 Emerging Influential Blogs 2011

Last year, six out of my Top Ten EIB choices landed on the winners list. This time around, I enter the writing project (now on its 5th year) much like my first time in 2009 - not knowing any newbies and eager to discover some really interesting blogs. I'm hoping to get to know some new bloggers in the process as well. :)

Reyjr checking in!

Hello readers and passers-by (haha)!

I just wanted to do a quick update about what's been happening around here and check-in to see what you guys are up to.  It's been ages since I last posted something like this, you know, like a Diary type entry.

This is not going to be lengthy, (but as some of you know I tend to ramble a little bit when I do these kinds of posts) I just wanted to share with you that...

Choco-late de Batirol in Baguio is heaven in a cup!

The rich chocolate aroma wafted in our general direction, and all of us went... "mmmm... sarap!"

American Idol 10: Top 3 Performances and Reviews

American Idol 10: Top 3 Performances and Reviews

Tonight, the American Idol Season 10 Top 3 contestants: Lauren Alaina, Scotty McCreery and Haley Reinhart will battle it out singing 3 songs each on stage for a spot at the Finale next week at the Nokia Theater. Also featured tonight - the traditional Top 3 Rock Star Homecoming. It will be awesome.

Who will make it to the Finale? Odds are in Scotty's favor - although some would say he might be in competition with Lauren Alaina for the Country Music fan vote. Then again, people might see a Scotty-Lauren pairing at the Finale better than a Scotty-Haley pairing, what with the several duets they've done on the show.

There is still a slim chance that Scotty might be dropped and Haley and Lauren will girl-fight it out in the Finale. Who knows, right? It will depend heavily on how they will perform tonight.

Here goes my Performance Reviews for the Top 3...

American Idol 10: The Top 4 Performances and Reviews

I just have to say, I enjoyed how the judges argued over the performances tonight. They should have done more of that earlier in the Season. It showcases their individual opinions, not manufactured opinions filled with catch phrases.

Anyway, on with the performance reviews. The Top 4 are first singing songs that inspire them and then singing songs from the Leiber-Stoller Songbook with advice from the crazy larger than life Lady Gaga.

Here are my reviews of their performances...

American Idol 10: Top 5 Results - Jacob Lusk finally off the show!

After weeks of predicting Jacob Lusk would be eliminated, it finally came true. :p

After singing both the male and female parts of "No Air" and hitting F# above high C on last night's Top 5 show, Jacob failed to impress America, proving high notes do not always mean high marks.

First time in the bottom 2, Lauren Alaina - judge (and Producer) favorite to win because of her country pop tone, easy to sell in today's market. But it was Man-Diva Jacob who eventually got the boot, leaving the Top 4 - James Durbin, Scotty McCreery, Lauren Alaina and Haley Reinhart - with James as the only one left who has not seen the bottom 2 from the beginning.

Who will make it to the Finale? Answer our poll below...

American Idol 10: Top 5 "Now & Then" Week Performances & Reviews

American Idol 10: Top 5 Performances and Reviews

It is down to 5 contestants on American Idol. In 4 weeks, a new American Idol will be announced. Which once will it be?

Well, it will depend heavily on their performances tonight! Coming into this week, the Poll for "Who will make it to the Finals?" still shows James Durbin and Scotty McCreery on top. But with Scotty in the bottom 2 last week, we can't say for sure. It is definitely still anyone's game, but for the moment, it is James' game to lose...

American Idol 10: Top 6 Eliminations - Casey gets the boot

American Idol 10: Top 6 Eliminations - Who got voted off?

It was Casey Abrams, and surprisingly not Jacob Lusk, nor either or the 2 remaining ladies who got the boot today on the American Idol Results show. Jacob Lusk and Scotty McCreery were in the Bottom 3.

My review of Casey's solo last night: "Casey Abrams growled "Hi-de-ho" and tried to pass it off as a vocal performance. Sorry dude, as talented I think you are, I never liked the pretentious bluesy rocker whatever persona. I thought it was silly."

But I did enjoy his duet with Haley Reinhart. Haley, another Idol contestant who has little to no chance of winning this Season should consider creating a singing group or band with Casey. They sound really good together eh?

Who will make it to the finals on American Idol Season 10?

With 5 remaining contestants, who do YOU think will make it to the Top 2? Last week, our poll yieleded James Durbin on top, with Casey and Scotty tied for second place. Now that Casey is off the show, will it be Scotty and James in the Finale? Vote in the poll below...

American Idol 10: Top 6 sing Carol King's Songbook

There was something about the show tonight that just left me, I don't know, kind of bored. I think Carol King's songs are wonderful and she sings them with such truth and sincerity, she makes you believe. Very few of the performances did that for me tonight....

American Idol 10: Top 6 Performance Reviews - the Music of Carol King

Jacob Lusk is in trouble. Granted we've seen him soar through beautifully on some songs this season, but with his lack of control - sharps and flats all around - I was certain he was going to get booted off sooner or later. Singing "On No Not My Baby", Jacob failed to impress me despite his sustain high notes. We've seen him do that before. Next!

In's first giveaway ever, I wish I was giving away the car pictured above - but don't fret because I am giving away the next best thing (LoL!): 2 Shell Ferrari model cars: a 612 Scaglietti and a 599 GTB Fiorano. I realized I already had the whole set, so might as well give these 2 away to one of my lucky blog readers. :D

It's not a contest, but I do want to give it to who really wants it most. :) Here are the very simple mechanics:

American Idol 10: Top 7 Elimination Results - Stefano goes home!

American Idol 10: Top 7 Elimination Results

We correctly predicted the bottom 3 - Stefano, Jacob and Haley, but it was Stefano Langone who sang "Closer" by Ne-Yo last night is the latest to get the boot on American Idol Season 10.

Stefano to me had the voice to really be a star, unfortunately he didn't have the swagger for it. It was like Jersey Shore the musical last night during his RnB number where he failed to impress anyone with his moves. He has a long way to go in terms of creating that persona of the smooth confident talker. :p

From our poll, this is how you guys ranked our Top 7:
1. James Durbin
2. Scotty McCreery
3. Casey Abrams
4. Haley Reinhart
5. Lauren Alaina
6. Jacob Lusk
7. Stefano Langone

I guess I should start listening to my audience here. Haha. They got it right again!

Who will make it to the American Idol Season 10 Finals?

So 6 contestants remain - see the continuing poll below - Can you predict who the Final 2 will be? Answer the poll below!

American Idol 10: Top 7 "Songs of the 21st Century" Reviews

American Idol 10: Top 7 "Songs of the 21st Century" Reviews

The show opened with a lookback at th auditions of the Top 7 - the faces in the crowd who are now "stars in the making" - well, a few of them are already bonafide stars whatever happens. Don't you agree?

Top 7 theme is "Music from the 21st Century" - that's a whole lot of current and very popular songs to choose from. But before the contestants, the eliminated contestants sang a cringe worthy version of Pink's "So What" - I mean, did they really have to put Paul in that group of ladies? It was just really bad. Gah. Anyway, on to the performance reviews!

American Idol 10: Top 8 Elimination Results - Paul is out!

American Idol 10: Top 8 Elimination Results

It was Paul McDonald who got booted off Idol on Thursday - I wasn't able to get my bottom 3 predictions correctly, but Paul's ouster I got right. I kind of feel bad for him though, his departure was of no fanfare, almost expected by everyone there. The battle of the vocalists was becoming apparent - and Paul just wasn't that kind of a singer. He is great at what he does though, so he should stick to that!

Our survey this week showed the readers of chose Jacob, Paul and Haley as the bottom 3, getting 2 correctly.  I think Jacob is in a bad position and may be going home next week, but Stefano who has been in the bottom 2 for 2 weeks in a row is probably the most in danger of going home. Well, there's still the possibility that someone would give a lackluster performance and lose votes...

American Idol 10: Ranking the Top 8 - "Music from the Movies" Performances

Please Like!

Hello everyone! I'm back! So sorry I wasn't able to make an American Idol post last week. I was on vacation. Apologies, I could've warned you all that Pia Toscano was going home. Hahaha!

This week, Jimmy Iovine is joined by Will.I.Am on the mentors panel - dishing out quips and jokes with his advice, but generally just sitting there being cute. I wished they had let him mentor a bit more. Or at least let him mentor during RnB week or something more along his line of work.

In any case, I thought the contestants did well tonight. Here are my notes from the show...

I survived iBlog7: The show must go on!

How cool is it that I get to share with you all what went down before our iBlog7 intermission number? ;) Such is the awesomeness of being a blogger.  Hehehe.

The iBlog7 Experience - the show must go on!

Promote this event badge
In show business, we always say "The show must go on!", a credo all performers have learned and internalized, myself being no exception. On April 2, the 2nd and final day of iBlog7: The 7th Philippine Blogging Summit, I was set to sing a few songs as an intermission number with my choirmates in The U.P. Concert Chorus. But as fate would have it, just 5 days before that, I completely lost my voice...

American Idol 10: Eliminations - Thia Megia and Naima Adedapo are...

Doesn't it make you smile when your predictions are right on the spot? Hahaha. :p

American Idol 10: Elton John Week Bottom 3

Paul McDonald, Thia Megia and Naima Adedapo were in the Bottom 3 for American Idol 10 - Top 11 Elton John Week, with Paul just missing elimination by the skin of his teeth. It was that lucky floral coat I tell you. :p

That big voiced FilAmerican Thia Megia failed to impress America yet again with her emotional rendition of "Daniel" and Naima Adedapo's reggae inspired "I'm Still Standing" did not inspire America to vote for her...

American Idol 10: Ranking the Top 11 for Elton John Week

It's Elton John Week

This week  the Top 11 are singing the songs of Flashy and Spunky Elton John.  Jimmy Iovine is definitely proving his worth. Giving the contestants wonderful guidance for their performances. The judges are also getting the hang of it, giving better reviews and better albeit incoherent advice to the contestants. ;) Even Steven Tyler is getting a bit more sense. Haha.

Here are my reviews of their performances. Don't forget to choose your bottom two in the poll at the end of this post!

iBlog7: The 7th Philippine Blogging Summit - See you there!

Promote this event badge
I can hardly believe how fast my blogging year went by. I was at iBlog6 last year, attending the annual event for the first time. Now I'm going for the second time - I know a quite a few more people now than I did last year, and so hopefully I won't feel as awkward, haha. :p But do say hello if you happen to recognize me. I promise to do the same...

I am looking forward to seeing some people I already know - Blogging couple EJ and Ginger Arboleda, my friend Roy de la Cruz and former schoolmate Jonel Uy will be presentors at iBlog, and Flow Galindez will be hosting - apart from them though, I really have no idea who else is coming. :p Are you going to iBlog7???

If you are, then I will see you there on Saturday! (I can only go on the 2nd day).
By the way, I will also be performing an intermission number with the UP Concert Chorus (UPCC) again this year. UPCC is the Official Choir of the University of the Philippines and we are celebrating the group's 50th Anniversary in 2012! It's going to be epic! ;)

American Idol Season 10: The Top 11 Reviews and Ranking

In one of the most crucial weeks in the finals competition, the survivors of this week's Motown-themed contest will be going on American Idol's Top 10 Summer Tour.

Judging the Judges

The judges were fine tonight - they've kind of grown on me already - although I do find myself not really caring so much about what they think haha - not like the way I wanted to hear what Simon thought after every performance. Oh well. Makes me think about X-Factor, hmm...will you be watching it?

Understanding the Role of Stock Inventories in Oil Pricing

The Press Release below was issued on March 4, 2011 by Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corp. in an effort to address questions raised about why prices are increasing based on global oil prices when they still have inventory of crude bought at a lower price.

To summarize the article below the answers are:
1. To ensure price transparency - it is the norm in open markets in other countries as well
2. In response to market competition (i.e. refiners vs importers)

In addition, crude is bought on a continuous basis, and so while the crude bought at a lower price 3 months ago is being sold at a higher price now, say a month from now when the oil prices go down, the crude bought at a higher price today will then be sold at a loss by the oil companies.

Anyway, onto the article. It explains it in more details. I encourage you to remove your bias for a second and try to read objectively and understand...

American Idol 10: Ranking the Top 12 Performances

Last week, Ashthon Jones was given the boot - she was the first Finalist to go home this season. Tonight, the Top 12 Finalists will compete singing songs from the year they were born.

Apologies to those following this blog for the AI 10 updates - I wasn't able to post last week because I was busy... Just a quick recap - although Ashthon gave a weak showing and was eventually booted off, Jacob Lusk - who sang OFF KEY on his "I Believe I Can Fly" should have been at the very least, in the bottom 2. America is being weird...

The 2010 Philippine Bar Exam Results released!

I have been eagerly awaiting the release of the 2010 Philippine Bar Exam Results as a friend of mine took the exam last year. It was held on all four Sundays of September (September 5, 12, 19, and 26) in 2010 at the De La Salle University (DLSU) in Taft Avenue, Manila.

This was also the Bar Exam of the infamous bombing that injured several people including 2 students who both lost their legs. Raissa Laurel, one of the blast victims needed to have both her legs amputated.

Earlier today, Chief Justice Renato C. Corona held a special En Banc session for the “decoding” of Bar results - the directive to decode “is when the Court orders the Bar Confidant to open envelopes containing the names of the examinees in the presence of the Bar Chairman.”

Here is the complete list of the 2010 Philippine Bar Exam Results...

American Idol 10: First Impressions - Ranking the Top 24

Judging the Judges

So here is the judges' speech - tell them they had ups and downs, good and bad parts in their Hollywood and Las Vegas auditions, there's only 24 spots, so much amazing talent, so tough to choose who will stay and who will go, then tell them they're sorry ... and that she/he got through. :p

OK fine whatever.

American Idol 10: Las Vegas and the Top 24

Tonight's 2 hour show brought overflowing tears of joy and heartbreak.

First, the Top 61 performed Beatles songs in groups of 2 and 3, some shining on the Cirque du Soleil stage, others, not so much. We finally managed to get a glimpse of some of the other remaining contestants who have not been given a lot of airtime. But of course, Nigel Lythgoe's favorites still get a spot. :p

What would you do if a Zombie attacked you right now?

AMC's The Walking Dead Season 1

So I watched the whole Season 1 of AMC's "The Walking Dead" last Saturday (until about 4am the following day) and have been thinking about zombies for a week now. No nightmares so far, but my thoughts have, of late been returning to zombie attacks and possible escape routes. I mean, will we be able to tell when a zombie will attack? Heck no! So we should be prepared right? Right? :p

What would I do if the walking dead suddenly attacks me right here, right now, while doing some random thing?

It's a zombie! Wah!
What to do if a zombie attacks you while you're jogging

I was jogging the other day. It was evening and the curb I needed to take was dark because the lampost oddly flickered off whenever a car passed by. I wondered, what would I do if a Zombie suddenly attacked me right here, right now, while doing some random thing like jogging? Hmmm....

American Idol 10: Top 40 and the Final day of Hollywood Auditions

It's the final day of the Hollywood auditions and the last day before the contestants' fate are handed over to America. One hundred contestants remained - this number brought down to less than half by the end of the episode. Next week it will be down to 24 and then down to the 12 finalists. Excited much?

Who's through to the next round? And who do you see doing well for the rest of the season?

Who's your favorite so far?

Watch out for these people in next week's episode when they will take on songs from the Beatles. Have you chosen your Top 24 yet? Who's on top of your list? Here are my notes from tonight's final Hollywood Week episode...

American Idol 10: Group Auditions and reviews

It's Hollywood Group Auditions tonight, arguably the toughest part of the whole American Idol audition process - it tests not only your skills on the stage, but also your team working capabilities. What is the logic behind this part?

I can't say for sure why they have this on Idol, but truly ALL singers do not and cannot work by himself. There is always a team behind him - from the song writers and composers, the stylists, make-up artists, the wardrobe folks, the Producers, PR managers, marketing execs.  I don't think anyone would want to hire some diva who's good, but cannot work well with others. :/

In any case, here's the list of folks featured tonight during the group auditions and what I thought about their performances...

Manny Pacquiao's LA mansion on MTV Cribs

So I heard Manny Pacquiao's Los Angeles mansion was recently featured on MTV Cribs. Here's the video!

Manny Pacquiao's LA mansion on MTV Cribs

The house sits on a 4,500 sq ft lot (418 sq. m) and has 5 bedrooms. Manny opens the door and announces his name with an odd American accent - ("Hi, I'm Manny Pahkyeow...") then proceeds to give a tour of the house.

"This is my house, so we have to put our pictures." Haha! Nice one. And that amazing swimming pool with a fireplace? That's the way to keep warm, eh?

American Idol Season 10: Los Angeles, California Auditions and reviews

Judging the Judges

I think I've identified what I'm missing from the judges - something Simon Cowell was really good at - describing how the audition went in an interesting way, both good and bad.

Steven Tyler just says it was "good" or "amazing". Jennifer Lopez simply wants to get things over with. And Randy Jackson is just rude.  I suppose it's not simply that someone should be describing the audition, but also they should give an explicit assessment of the audition - verbalize what they feel, what they think, and not just say yes or no...

American Idol 10: Austin, Texas auditions and reviews

Will the next American Idol be from Austin, Texas - again?

Judging the Judges

Season 1 winner, Kelly Clarkson was discovered in Austin, Texas and Idol returned tonight to mine for some more hidden talents.

Steven Tyler assures he will no longer say "F*ck" on camera. :) Good to know. Although we really didn't need to know that.

Randy Jackson is continuing his mean judge role which to me still is too rude. In general, I think they should talk more - say what they think more and coach the contestants a bit more. I've heard them give some advice to the contestants, they should do more of that. It helps the contestants and gives them more credibility as judges too...

American Idol 10 - Nashville, Tennessee auditions and reviews

Judging the Judges

I'm beginning to see a pattern in Nigel Lythgoe's directions. Open the show with one of the weird auditions or reactions, then start it off formally with several good singers, highlight some really good ones, then change the flow and declared the city turned "to the dark side" or some other pun. Follow that with a few more better singers and then end with a good enough singer with a heart wrenching story. Aaaaaaaand that's a wrap America!

So this week, Nigel shook it up a bit and began the auditions with a terrible one. Nice going Mr. Lythgoe.

I'm noticing Randy Jackson is trying to be the bad guy on the panel seeing the other 2 are sugary sweet. It's kind of just rude...

American Idol 10 - Milwaukee, Wisconsin auditions and reviews

Judging the Judges

Steven Tyler is hilarious in this episode of AI. And Jennifer Lopez seemed to be getting the hang of turning people down. Although I must say, I am kind of beginning to miss Simon Cowell just a little bit.

My recommendation remains - they should disagree more. Or at least show them really try and make a case for or against an audition. Right now it just seems too easy - bring in a good singer who goes through then bring in really terrible singers that get turned down.  I'd love to see more on the fence type of people and one of them really making a case for him/her...

The Big Bad Blogger an unfolding scandal

Big Bad Blogger aka BBB

Both Bloggers and non-Bloggers alike have been equally intrigued by who the Big Bad Blogger (ingeniously shortened to "BBB") could possibly be - although I must say, anyone in his (we at least know BBB is male) right mind would confess to "giving Blogging a bad name", what with all the hullabaloo and media attention it has received...

Review: affordable luxury in a Phuket beach resort

This is a review for Horizon Beach Resorts and Hotels.

A trip to Phuket, Thailand means a trip down to the beautiful beaches of this tropical island paradise, and if you're looking for a place to stay - a beach resort in the heart of Patong, or considering a karon lodging hotel that's both luxurious and affordable, or maybe budget accommodations on Patong Beach - Horizon Beach Resorts and Hotels offer these and more.

I am quite easy to please in the sense that if there is a beautiful white sand beach, such as with Patong and Karon Beaches, excellent and affordable massages by capable masseurs and masseuses, and a wonderful relaxing atmosphere - then I'm all set. Everything else is a bonus...

American Idol Season 10 - New Orleans Auditions

American Idol Season 10

It was a short 1 hour episode (compared to last night's 2-hour opening, that is) where all the judges seemed to agree on everyone either going though or not going through.

I see the first signs of a crack here - they need to disagree sometimes while making believable cases why it is a yes and why it is a no.

The ratings for the opening show was a huge 10% dip compared to last year - but I'm optimistic it will grow again. They need better direction though - I expect to be wowed by their talent, and not just swayed by their back stories. Bring it America!

American Idol Season 10 - It's a whole new show!

Have you been eagerly anticipating the return of American Idol as much as I have? Well it's back on it's 10th Season and it's a whole new show!

What's new? For starters, they've lowered the age limit to 15 years old possibly in an attempt to capture the tween market that Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus and Disney expertly exploit...

Reyjr goes Hawaii Five-O!

Hawaii Five-O! That unmistakable opening title sequence music brings back childhood memories. The original series ended wayyy before I was born and so I never saw a single episode, but despite that, the opening theme sounds fresh to my ears...

Hawaii Five O!

I've been to Hawaii twice - the first time was in the year 2000 during the 14th International Tour of the UP Concert Chorus.  Everyone was excited about Hawaii - the first stop of the 2000 Millennium Concert Tour - I was particularly interested because of all the hype about Hawaii being a paradise, with luscious forests and active volcanoes, creamy white sand beaches and surfing waves...

Reyjr Travel Tip #002:

"Traveling is not always fun - but if you create the fun wherever you go, then the beautiful places become an awesome backdrop of an already wonderful experience."
